MYTHIC WOMEN’S AFTERLIVES CHOREOGRAPHED TODAY
Charitini Tsikoura – Choreologist, Researcher.
What becomes of myth when it is rewritten through movement? Rewriting, Rerouting, Reidentifying: Mythic Women’s Afterlives Choreographed Today explores how mythic heroines and goddesses re-emerge in contemporary culture and continue to move through dance, dance-theatre, and hybrid performance practices. Rather than treating embodiment as a mere vehicle for representing myth, the book argues that it constitutes a site where myth persists, transforms, and acquires new meanings.
Through three interconnected trajectories – rewriting, rerouting, and reidentifying – the author develops a tripartite framework for understanding embodiment as a mode of mythic transmission, cultural memory, and knowledge production. It examines how choreography reshapes inherited narratives, redirects their affective and symbolic paths, and generates fluid forms of subjectivity. Myth becomes living material, reactivated through movement, voice, gesture, and corporeal presence.
At the intersection of memory and invention, these choreographic afterlives reveal a kinaesthetic palimpsest in which traces, continuities, and reconfigurations intertwine.
